Jaskirt Dhaliwal-Boora

People, Place and Sport

People, Place and Sport is a celebration of local communities and sport in the West Midlands.

Over the last year Boora has been photographing the sporting hubs tucked away in our communities where grassroots sport takes place on a weekly basis.

This exploration of our relationship to space and physical activity has taken on a new layer of meaning since the pandemic.

The way we use spaces has become multi-faceted, and physical activity is just as important for our mental wellbeing as our physical.

The conversations Boora is having with people in the community about what sport means to them is important in the development of the project and has shaped the forthcoming exhibitions.

The exhibitions will take place during the Commonwealth Games Cultural Festival 2022.

There will be multiple outdoor exhibitions as part of Birmingham 2022 Festival, combining audio interviews (available to listen via QR codes) and images of portraits and landscapes.

From 4 April – 31 August there will be 8 outdoor exhibitions of portraits in Wednesbury, West Bromwich, Rowley Regis, Hockley, Digbeth, Bourneville and Balsall Heath.

From 4 July– 31 August
A big outdoor exhibition, combining portraits and landscapes photographed across the region will be exhibited outdoors at Sandwell Valley country park, Salter’s Lane, West Bromwich B71 4BG.

All exhibitions are free to view and attend.

People, Place and Sport was made possible through funding and support from Arts Council England, Multistory, Birmingham 2022 Festival programme and GRAIN Projects.
